JENNIFER LIM

BIOGRAPHIE

Having started to play the piano before the age of five, Korean-Canadian pianist Jennifer Lim made her first public appearance one year later and came into the spotlight when she captured the Grand Prize at the Korea Times National Music Competition at age eight. At seventeen, she won second prize at The Joanna Hodges International PIano Competition in the US, and at twenty-four she was awarded a diploma at The Clara Schumann International Competition in Germany. Her major teachers include Jane Coop and Anton Kuerti, Soo Jung Shin as well as Peter Serkin at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she was awarded the coveted Rachmaninoff/Festorazzi Prize. She then completed her master's degree at The Juilliard School in New York City as a protegee of the legendary pianist Bella Davidovich. Praised by The Financial Times, Germany for her "stupendous finger technique in break-neck passages, and, in the slow movement, deeply penetrating substance," Jennifer Lim made her EUropean recital debut at the Burghofspiele Eltville Festival, which was followed two months later by her New York debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, both to critical acclaim in 2001.

As a dynamic soloist she graced the stages with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in their season opening gala concert, and with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Lima Symphony Orchestra, New Haven Symphony Orchestra and Roanoke Symphony Orchestra in the US, CBC Chamber Orchestra, Montreal's McGill Chamber Orchestra, Regina Symphony Orchestra, and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at both the Orpheum Theatre and Chan Centre in Canada, State Philharmonic Orchestra of Ard in Romania, Buchon Philharmonic Orchestra, EuroAsian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Seoul National Theater under the direction of maestro Gum Nan Se in Korea, and Seoul National Symphony Orchestra on their tour of Canada, among many others around the world. The distinguished composer Christos Hatzis wrote "Through the Glass Darkly" for solo piano especially for Jennifer Lim which was featured on a 6-city Debut Atlantic Tour. Over the years in Germany alone she has performed in Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Freiburg and Wuppertal, with broadcasts on Deutschlandfunk.

A passionate chamber musician, she has performed at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Symphony Space and Merkin Hall in New York City, National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Wolf Trap in Virginia, Annenberg Theater in Palm Desert, Mooredale Concert Series in Toronto, as well as in France and Taiwan. From 2009 to 2013 she was the artistic director of the annual Vancouver Winter Chamber Music Festival working in partnership with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/CBC Radio. Notable artists she has collaborated with include Shmuel Ashkenasi, Sarah Chang, Jonathan Crow, Alexander Fiterstein, Hilary Hahn, Anthony McGill, Peter Wiley, and the world-renowned Prazak Quartet, with whom she had the pleasure of appearing in one of Europe's longest-running concert series, Albert Konzerte in 2012. She was immediately invited back to give a solo recital in the series in 2014. Jennifer Lim also released a duo disc with violist/composer Nokuthula Ngwenyama on EDI and oboist Katherine Needleman on GENUIN, and in 2019 was invited to collaborate with Korean modern dancer, Sun-Tae Lee at Seoul International Choreography Festival.

As a recognized recording artist, her all-Chopin debut CD, recorded when she was twenty-four, received rave reviews from such prestigious publications as Fono Forum (five out of five stars), Audiophile, SCALA, and PIano News. This CD was the subject of a Chopin Special on the Bayerischer Rundfunk, praising her as "the only young artist who can play Chopin... with the greats such as Argerich, Pogorelich, Michelangeli, and Kapell." She currently has 8 CDs commercially released to her credit, including a disc featuring the monumental Goldberg Variations, and her 2015-released Mozart album was commended "Mozart Magic" by the Crescendo Magazine. Many of her CDs are enjoyed by avid followers on Spotify.

Jennifer Lim is also the founder and executive director of Beautiful Today Society, a non-profit organization supporting younger artists with scholarships and performance opportunities as well as various charities around the globe.
